Cavell Leitch helps out many charities in our community through its association with United Way and through our newsletter we would like to put a spotlight charities who have been helped by United Way.
This month's spotlight is on the Mothers Supporting Mothers Trust.
Mothers Supporting Mothers is an incorporated charitable trust established in 1994 by two North Canterbury-based midwives, who recognised a need in the community for a professionally guided support group for mothers struggling with the demands of parenthood. Sessions are held in Rangiora and Kaiapoi and are facilitated by women with mid-wifery / counselling backgrounds. The sessions are relaxed and informal, although structured. Childcare staff and volunteers offer a childminding service on site to enable mothers to attend the group sessions.
The Trust's mission is to contribute to the well-being and self sufficiency of mothers and consequently their families in North Canterbury, by providing:
• Support for women with postnatal depression
• Help with and prevention of postnatal depression
• Increase awareness of issues involved in adjusting to parenthood
• Skilled facilitators for group meetings and invidivual counselling
• Facilities for women to meet with freedom from childcare
Just some of the things Mothers Say About the Trust:
• "When I suffered from post-natal depression, the group offered me wonderful support".
• "When things were tough for me they were helpful and caring".
• "Without them I would still be lost".
• "I enjoyed the closeness, friendship and acceptance".
• "The childcare volunteers are brilliant with the little ones. I know my baby is in good hands".
The Mothers Supporting Mothers board is currently working to bring on board two paid facilitators, two paid childcare workers and some volunteers. They have purchased some new resources for the children and there is a plan to set up a library for the mothers which would provide books that relate to topics that come up in group talks. The Trust is also working on new ways to reach out to new and current mothers through digital means.

Some more information about United Way:
United Way have been improving lives and strengthening communities around the world for more than 125 years and enjoys the support of 70,000 companies. Cavell Leitch is one of those companies in New Zealand and has enjoyed a partnership with United Way for approximately 14 years. Our staff not only donate through payroll, but also donate time. Some of our partners assist in choosing the charities to support and one of our staff member is the Canterbury Regional Co-ordinator. We are committed to helping United Way create lasting change in our community.
United Way envisions a world where all individuals and families achieve their human potential through education, income stability and healthy lives. The Charity’s mission is to improve lives by mobilising the caring power of communities around the world to advance the common good.
For those that aren’t aware of United Way’s work, they collect donations and then give grants to charities who apply. Some of these charities are too small to attract much attention for donations or are not “popular” charities, but still do fantastic work in our communities.
