Cavell Leitch helps out many charities in our community through its association with United Way and through our newsletter we would like to put a spotlight charities who have been helped by United Way.
This month's spotlight is on The Multiple Sclerosis & Parkinson's Society of Christchurch.
The Multiple Sclerosis & Parkinson’s Society of Canterbury was established in 1962 and has been actively involved in their community of interest since that time.
Mission: Providing support and information for people with Multiple Sclerosis and Parkinson’s in Canterbury
They are a small dedicated team, committed to the best possible outcomes for their members at every stage of their condition. The Service Manager, Nurses and Physiotherapists are highly regarded in professional circles, both locally and nationally as a resource for evidence-based practice in assisting people to maximise their independence and quality of life whilst living with Multiple Sclerosis or Parkinson’s.
Home visits for people who are newly diagnosed with MS or Parkinson’s, with follow up visits as required; support and information for members, their family, friends, caregivers, health professionals, employers and work colleagues; liaison with medical clinicians and general practitioners; up-to-date evidence based information about MS and Parkinson’s; referrals to health professionals for assessment and assistance with daily living; access to subsidised Podiatrist; the Society provides individual and group exercises and assessment at their specialised gym; yoga, exercise classes and Nordic walking; Education Workshops on Living Well with Multiple Sclerosis or Parkinson’s; Social Activity Programmes for members and their spouses/caregivers, providing an opportunity to network with others who are sharing a similar experience.
The Society needs to fundraise for a significant percentage of our funds in order for them to continue to provide and improve services for members. Main sources of funding come from Trusts and Foundations, the Annual Street Appeal and occasional Bequests. The Society is currently looking for volunteers for its Annual Street Appeal, so if you can help please give them a shout!
Some more information about United Way:
United Way have been improving lives and strengthening communities around the world for more than 125 years and enjoys the support of 70,000 companies. Cavell Leitch is one of those companies in New Zealand and has enjoyed a partnership with United Way for approximately 14 years. Our staff not only donate through payroll, but also donate time. Some of our partners assist in choosing the charities to support and one of our staff member is the Canterbury Regional Co-ordinator. We are committed to helping United Way create lasting change in our community.
United Way envisions a world where all individuals and families achieve their human potential through education, income stability and healthy lives. The Charity’s mission is to improve lives by mobilising the caring power of communities around the world to advance the common good.
For those that aren’t aware of United Way’s work, they collect donations and then give grants to charities who apply. Some of these charities are too small to attract much attention for donations or are not “popular” charities, but still do fantastic work in our communities.
