Adult Reading Assistance Scheme (Christchurch)

“It’s everyone’s right to read and write.”
ARAS is a not-for-profit organisation which provides adult literacy and numeracy assistance on a one-to-one and/or small group basis at no direct cost to the student. ARAS trains a pool of volunteer tutors through its parent body, Literacy Aotearoa, to work with adult students to assist them to improve their literacy and numeracy skills.

Art in a Garden

In 2001 friends Penny Zino & Alison Meyer had a vision of introducing the beauty and peace of the district of Hawarden & Waikari. Not only did they see that district offered visitors to the area a chance to experience rural North Canterbury's spectacular vistas but also enjoy Flaxmere a Garden of National Significance, hence the idea was born to exhibit sculpture in the garden gallery of Flaxmere and paintings displayed in old barn converted into a gallery. They both wanted the exhibition to have a charity aspect. Their chosen charities were and remain so today, The Cancer Society and Amuri St John.

Big Brothers Big Sisters Christchurch

Big Brothers Big Sisters Christchurch (BBBS) is a charity which recognises that not all children in the world get the same opportunities in life, mainly because of the homes they are born into. Without assigning any blame for that, BBBS is all about bringing some balance to the lives of these kids by providing them with an adult friend/mentor with whom they can have some fun and who is around to give them some support and encouragement in life.

Canterbury Rugby

The Canterbury Rugby Football Union (CRFU) has a long and proud history since it was established as the first Union in New Zealand in 1879. In 2012 Canterbury won their 5th consecutive provincial title against old foes Auckland! The 2012 Canterbury team made history with the victory – no team has ever won five titles in a row since the launch of the competition in 1976.

Christchurch City Mission

The Christchurch City Mission offers an invitation to all people, to lend a supporting hand to those discarded, abandoned or overlooked by our society. The vital work of the Christchurch City Mission is made possible with support from our many charitable trusts and foundations; however the majority of our funding comes from individual donations and bequests from the people of Canterbury.

Christchurch Golf Club

The Christchurch Golf Club has a proud history that dates back to 1873. The club is the second oldest in New Zealand and the fifth oldest outside the United Kingdom. The club has held numerous New Zealand Open and Amateur, Men’s and Women’s Championships. The course is renowned world-wide as a challenging championship course of the highest quality which offers a fair test of golf for both club and professional golfer.

The Equal Employment Opportunities (EEO) Trust is a not-for-profit organisation tasked with providing EEO information and tools to employers and raising awareness of diversity issues in New Zealand workplaces.

Hagley Oval Foundation

The Canterbury Cricket Trust is a registered charitable trust formed specifically for the long-term benefit of cricket in Canterbury. The first major project for the Trust is to raise funds through the Hagley Oval Foundation to establish an international-standard quality ground at Hagley Oval. The success of this project will provide a permanent home for Canterbury Cricket and enable Christchurch to once again play host to prestigious international matches.

Mothers Supporting Mothers

Mothers Supporting Mothers is an incorporated charitable trust established in 1994 by two North Canterbury-based midwives, who recognised a need in the community for a professionally guided support group for mothers struggling with the demands of parenthood. Sessions are held in Rangiora and Kaiapoi and are facilitated by women with midwifery / counselling backgrounds. The sessions are relaxed and informal, although structured. Childcare staff and volunteers offer a child minding service on site to enable mothers to attend the group sessions.

Mount Pleasant School Art Expo

All Mt Pleasant pupils are involved in a yearly art exhibition run by the school. This is a fundraising opportunity, where our school is transformed into an art gallery. Local and New Zealand artist exhibit and sell their work, alongside the amazing creative work of our talented students.

Multiple Sclerosis & Parkinson’s Society of Canterbury

The Multiple Sclerosis & Parkinson’s Society of Canterbury was established in 1962 and has been actively involved in their community of interest since that time. They are a small dedicated team, committed to the best possible outcomes for their members at every stage of their condition.

Mission: Providing support and information for people with Multiple Sclerosis and Parkinson’s in Canterbury.

New Zealand Blue Light

New Zealand Blue Light (Blue Light) is a community policing youth program that has been running programs and activities for young people throughout New Zealand for over 30 years. Blue light aims to build better relations between the police, young people, their parents of the community with the hope of reducing youth crime by building young people’s self esteem and encouraging positive youth and police partnerships.

NZ Association of Artist Doctors

Every year a group of multi-talented doctors takes to the stage to create some work-life balance - and to practise the healing arts. The NZ Association of Artist Doctors presents an annual concert in Christchurch that features music, visual arts, comedy and dance.

NZ Breast Cancer Foundation

The NZ Breas Cancer Foundation’s vision is to prevent New Zealanders developing and dying from breast cancer and to improve the quality of life of those who have the disease. The money we receive helps us achieve this vision through; early detection education, supporting those with breast cancer, research & medical grants and advocacy. NZBCF is a non-government funded charitable trust and is totally reliant on grants and donations.

Rekindle

Rekindle is a social enterprise that enables diversion of reusable resources from waste via creativity and craftsmanship. Seeing waste as resources full of latent creative opportunity fuels our work. We have initially focused on diverting timber from waste within residential demolition in Christchurch, turning this into furniture, interiors, sculpture and jewellery.

Rise Up Stacey Trust

In the February 22nd 2011 earthquake Stacey was trapped inside The Press building for over 8 hours. The severe crush injuries she received resulted in the loss of both her legs above the knees. Stacey spent over 6 months in hospital and is still working hard at rehabilitation. Stacey's wish is to visit a specialised clinic in Oaklahoma USA that works mainly with double amputees and in fitting them with computerised limbs. This will mean return trips back to the clinic as Stacey gradually increases her height. This is a long journey that Stacey faces but she does so with the love and support from family and friends. All funds are held in the Rise Up Stacey Trust account at Cavell Leitch law firm.

Since 1989 Ronald McDonald House Charities has been creating, finding and supporting programmes that directly improve the health and well-being of children. Our core programmes are focused on helping families in need and are developed after long term research and evaluation to ensure we are meeting the needs of children and families in the best possible ways.

Rose Centre for Stroke Recovery & Research

The University of Canterbury Rose Centre for Stroke Recovery and Research at St Georges Medical Centre was established in 2014 due to the generosity of Mrs Shirley Rose (a client of Cavell Leitch), who spent many of her final years tending to the disability created by stroke in her husband. This facility relies heavily on fundraising and donations to be able to provide the amazing services and continue with research. Their vision is to; develop new standards of ‘best practice’ for rehabilitation of stroke across all ages, as well as developing and providing clinical services for stroke patients that meet the patients’ clinical needs and also allows those patients to contribute to research that will help others.

Shave for a Cure – Leukaemia & Blood Cancer New Zealand

Funds raised through Shave for a Cure help Leukaemia & Blood Cancer New Zealand (LBC) support the 10,000 Kiwis living with a blood cancer or related condition in your local community. LBC offers personalised support and information to patients and their families, funds research into better treatments and finding a cure, raises awareness about the diseases and advocates on behalf of patients.

The Court Theatre

The Court Theatre is a professional theatre company based in Christchurch. It was founded in 1971 and located in the Christchurch Arts Centre from 1976 until the February 2011 Christchurch earthquake. It opened new premises in Addington in December 2011. In addition to being a full-time professional theatre company, The Court Theatre operates numerous other activities in the community.
